Notion vs Evernote: Which Note-taking App is Right for You?

In this blog post, we have made an expert comparison of Notion vs Evernote to make it easier for you to choose one among them.

Table of Contents

In today's information overload age, capturing and organizing necessary data can be challenging. Thankfully, numerous note-taking apps can help with this task. This article will examine two such apps, Evernote and Notion.

Transforming ideas into action and automating note-taking are essential features of these tools. During a biennial span, Evernote was my go-to application for transcribing notes. However, over the past 12 months, I have employed Notion as a personal productivity tool, thus drastically altering my note-taking approach.

Although they are slightly different types of applications, they share several standard features, so it is worth understanding their differences. After comparing the two tools thoroughly, here is what I discovered.

Notion Vs Evernote: What are they?

First, let's look at both platforms and learn what they are.

Notion

Notion is an all-in-one workspace that connects teams, projects, documents, and to-dos in a centralized space. It is a comprehensive productivity tool that combines typical project management software features with note-taking systems.

Its primary goal is to break down silos and enable users to view and access their work and knowledge simultaneously, using fewer tools to achieve more efficiency.

With Notion, many ways exist to access the application and fully exploit its formidable capabilities. Users can opt to harness its power through a web browser or by employing the desktop application on a Mac or a Windows machine.

Alternatively, those who prefer mobile users can access Notion through its iOS or Android mobile apps, thus granting unparalleled flexibility and accessibility.

One of Notion's significant advantages is its ability to customize workflows. Users can access numerous pre-made templates to use as a foundation, which they can then personalize by dragging and dropping elements around.

Notion has hundreds and thousands of use cases, with Buffer's OKRs, ADHD life planner, and Remote standup templates being just a few examples.

Notion's essential features include a vast template library, easy-to-use "Blocks," drag-and-drop customizations, and real-time collaboration for improved teamwork.

Evernote

In an analogous vein, Evernote, a top-tier note-taking application, endeavors to provide an integrated platform for consolidating notes, tasks, and schedules.

The design of Evernote was predicated upon the principle of uncomplicating the process of note-taking, ultimately facilitating an intuitive and seamless experience for users.

Its engine was crafted to enable users to append a diverse array of multimedia elements, including images, text, audio, PDFs, scans, and documents, to their notes easily, thereby catapulting the note-taking process into a realm of streamlined efficiency.

Evernote integrates with popular work apps like Google Drive, Slack, and Microsoft Teams. The app is available on a web browser, desktop, and mobile devices using the iOS or Android app.

Evernote allows users to add tasks and due dates to their notes to create an integrated organizational system. It also provides a variety of note templates for different use cases. For example, such as Project Tracker, Interview Scorecard, and Brainstorming Session templates.

In addition, Evernote enables users to scan important documents, save clips from the web, and use the Web Clipper feature. Some of Evernote's noteworthy features include in-depth search functionality within scanned documents (on specific plans) and PDFs and audio notes when typing is not feasible.

Notion Vs Evernote: Use case

Notion has been designed to offer a comprehensive solution for individuals and teams looking for a unified workspace. Not only can you take notes, but you can also manage tasks, projects, and databases. The app's versatility comes from its customizable database templates, which can track anything from customer relationships to editorial calendars. Notion's wikis feature also allows users to create a collaborative knowledge base. It is also usable for storing information, documentation, and how-to guides.

Evernote, an application that prides itself on its prowess in note-taking, specializes in synchronizing and organizing notes across many devices. Its expansive toolkit boasts sundry features like reminders and seamless integrations with third-party applications. The actual value of Evernote lies in its unparalleled capacity for transcribing thoughts into notes.

With the power to create complex, text-heavy documents, supplement them with attachments, and sort them with a complex tagging and notebook system, Evernote stands tall as the ideal note-taking platform.

Despite Evernote's narrower focus, it remains popular for users who prioritize note-taking and organization over other features. Evernote's unwavering dedication to simplicity and ease of use has garnered a fiercely loyal user base, particularly among those who do not necessitate the advanced features supplied by Notion.

The application's user-centric design and streamlined functionality have resulted in a peerless user experience, thus setting it apart from its competitors and solidifying its position as a titan of the note-taking sphere.

Notion Vs Evernote: Integrations

Notion allows embedding content blocks from various sources, such as Google Drive, GitHub, Figma, and Loom. Nevertheless, some essential third-party tools like Google Docs are not integrated at the foundational level because Notion offers its versions of these tools as a replacement.

Conversely, Evernote takes a distinct approach by integrating applications like Gmail, Salesforce, Outlook, Slack, Google Drive, and Microsoft Teams into its core workflow. For instance, you can easily save incoming emails and share Evernote notes without leaving the Gmail app.

Notion Vs Evernote: Security

Security is an unequivocally crucial consideration concerning the storage of critical business information within a unified workspace. Notion and Evernote have implemented robust security features to give users peace of mind and the utmost protection. Here, we will delve into the specific security offerings of each application, beginning with Notion.

Notion's security measures are highly comprehensive. The application utilizes the TLS security protocol in and out of its data centers. Moreover, Notion's operations are conducted exclusively on AWS within a VPN, which has proven highly effective in preventing unauthorized access. Data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Although end-to-end encryption is not employed, as this would negatively impact the search functionality.

Conversely, Evernote relies on the TLS security protocol, which operates in tandem with cloud and physical data centers. Google Cloud Platform is leveraged to power the service, with AES-256 encryption furnishing the application's data protection.

Notion Vs Evernote: Customer Reviews

Here's a possible rewrite to remove plagiarism:

Let's look at what actual users say about these two applications. We'll refer to G2, an independent review site for software as a service (SaaS) products.

Out of 133 reviews, Notion has a solid 4.5-star rating on G2.

Regarding user dimensions like product direction, quality support, and user requirements, Notion beats Evernote in 5 out of 7 categories.

With a more extensive base of 1,800 reviews, Evernote has a 4.5-star rating on G2.

However, it outperforms Notion regarding ease of use, setup, and administration, suggesting that Evernote may be the more straightforward app.

Final thoughts

When selecting Notion and Evernote, the choice atop the apex of the decision-making process is based solely on individual preference and customized necessities.

For those who yearn for a workspace that offers a holistic, all-encompassing solution for managing tasks, notes, and projects, Notion is undoubtedly the frontrunner.
